3/12/2007

today's Straits Times reported that 1 in 4 teens and young adults here and in developed countries cld face mental problems.

Some excerpts from the article:-

"25 per cent of those in their teens and early 20s suffer fr mental problems such as anoroxia, anxiety, depression, psychosis and personality disorder"

" This means that going by sg's popn growth rate, 1,000 babies born here each yr cld end up with serious psychological problems."

" Most serious mental illnesses hit people in theirs teens or early 20s- when the brain'a frontal lobe is developing...This is an area that helps u plan, organise, strategise- all the high level processing. It is important in controlling behaviour and emotion- which adolescents struggle with."

I found the article, first, alarming. But on the other hand, it does raise awareness of this potential problem which cld face our popn as sg develops.

Psychological problems' sometimes more scary than physical pain. it might just quietly creep into a person's life and affect their behaviour and mentality. The worse is when the person chooses to live in denial, that they choose to believe that they are "alright". It takes courage to face it -to accept treatment and face the pain that is causing their psychological problem. Some people tk months to recover, but some may take years. It's a person's attitude, determination and sometimes encouragement from their loved ones which help them to walk out of it?

People are trapped in their own pain. But when we see and learn bout other ppl's problems, our own pain becomes insignificant. ( Now I noe what's all the CIP back in school was for haa)

And i nv knew psychological problems can be caused by the brain. eh I learn sthg new. =)
